Saiyami Kher on playing a para-athlete in R Balki’s sports drama; says, ‘filming for Ghoomer opened my eyes’

Saiyami Kher will soon be seen in an interesting and inspiring role of a para-athlete in R Balki’s sports drama titled Ghoomer. She will be seen as a specially-abled cricket prodigy in the venture and although Saiyami grew up playing cricket, essaying a role of a para-athlete had been very challenging for the actress.

Sharing her experiences and challenges she faced during the prep of Ghoomer Saiyani revealed that doing this movie opened her eyes. Siayami says, “I play the role of a left-handed bowler in Ghoomer and, for me, in real life, I am a right-handed player. I could never actually step into the shoes of a real-life para-athlete, but even the small hurdles I had to overcome being an athlete myself, reminded me of things we take for granted. Preparing and filming for Ghoomer opened my eyes in a way that I never thought would happen to go into it. It was a physically and emotionally challenging time, but my struggles were minuscule when compared to those heroes who make our country proud by participating in so many sports as para-athletes”.

Furthermore, as the actress is also essaying the role of a firefighter in the action drama ‘Agni’, she talked about both characters and said, “I believe all heroes don’t wear capes and there are many unsung heroes. I am looking forward to 2023 because I get to play a few such characters.”

“A sportsperson, who, even after losing a hand, didn’t lose her spirit or a lady firefighter, who is hardly spoken about: these characters don’t just give you perspective on life as an actor but also as a human being,” she added.

Coming back to Ghoomer,  this movie also stars Abhishek Bachchan, Angad Bedi, and Shabana Azmi in pivotal roles. The movie is co-written by Balki, along with Rahul Sengupta and Rishi Virmani, and it is currently in the post-production stage. The movie is inspired by the story of Karoly Takacs the late Hungarian right-hand shooter, who went on to win two Olympic gold medals with his left hand after his other hand was seriously injured.
