Varisu movie review: Vijay carries the burden of predictable family drama in style!

After a long wait, Thalapathy Vijay starrer Varisu has been released today. The movie is directed by Vamshi Paidipally and it features Vijay, Rashmika Mandanna, Sarath Kumar, Jayasudha, Srikanth, Shaam, and Prakash Raj in key roles.

Plot

The movie centers around the family of Rajendran (Sarath Kumar), who is one of the biggest businessmen in India. Rajendra has two prodigal sons – Jai and Ajay (Srikanth and Shaam) who look after his business. Even the general masses know, that one of the two prodigal sons will be the heir of Rajendran’s empire.

The story kickstarts when Rajendra finds out that he is suffering from advanced-stage pancreatic cancer. Knowing his days are numbered, he plans to fulfill his wife’s wish of celebrating his 65th birthday in a grandly. Rajendran’s youngest son, Vijay Rajendran (Vijay) returns home for the celebration after seven years at his mother’s request. He left home after having an argument with his father over joining the family business. What kind of changes his return brings, what kind of problems his family has to face, and why his father makes him the chairman of his empire, are what make the rest of the story.

What works?

Vijay’s presence in the movie is remarkable. After doing action movies in recent years, seeing the actor doing fun roles in out-and-out family drama is refreshing. Vijay’s comical side also does magic on the screen and his effortless performance will be a plus for even a non-Vijay fan. The family moments are also good. Especially the bond between Vijay and Jayasudha( Vijay’s mother in the movie) is also great.

What does not work?

To be honest, Varisu is a predictable family drama movie with no new angle or twist. If you mentioned the general plot to the masses one can mistake it for any other family drama movie that is out there. The only thing that keeps the predictability tolerable is Vijay’s presence and his comical performance.

Also, the conflict between the brother is shown to a superficial level and a stronger clash between them would have added more emotion to the story.

Overall

Overall, the movie does not disappoint based on its trailer. Songs from S Thaman are great and the family drama with Vijay’s presence also works magically but the whole thing would have elevated more if the story wouldn’t have been so predictable. Other than that, it would have been better if Rashmika would have a more impactful role in the venture.
